Itinerary for a Tour
Day 1: Arrival and Tour of Kigali
Our professional tour guide will meet you at the Kigali international airport and take you on a city tour of Kigali’s history, including the Gisozi genocide memorial site, the national library, local markets, and craft shops, depending on your arrival time. Lter will have supper and sleep at Kigali Serena Hotel/Flame Tree Village/Garr Hotel.
Day 2: Transfer to Akagera National Park for a game drive in the afternoon.
Wake up for a cup of coffee before heading to Akagera National Park, arriving in time for lunch at Akagera Game Lodge. After lunch, take a boat ride on Lake Ihema in the afternoon. Hippos, crocodiles, and water fowl can be expected. Dinner and overnight stay at Rusizi Tented Camp (luxury) or Akagera Game Lodge (deluxe).
Day 3: Morning game drive followed by an afternoon boat trip.
You will embark on game drives early in the morning up to the northern portion of the park to catch up with early risers before they go into hiding. You will have the opportunity to observe lions, antelopes, giraffes, and bush bucks, among other animals. Return to the hotel for rest and lunch by 11:00 a.m. After lunch, take an afternoon boat trip on Lake Ihema, where you will be rewarded with sightings of wildlife such as hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species. Dinner and overnight stay at Rusizi Tented Camp (luxury) or Akagera Game Lodge (deluxe).
Transfer to Nyungwe National Park on Day 4.
After breakfast, you will depart from Akagera for Nyungwe National Park. You will stop along route at the Nyanza Museum, the Butare Museum, and other sites suitable for photography and adventure, as well as for lunch. Arrive in Nyungwe in the evening for dinner and a night’s sleep at Nyungwe Forest Lodge/Nyungwe Top View Lodge/Gisakura Hotel.
Chimp Tracking on Day 5
After an early breakfast at your hotel, proceed with your guide to the Nyungwe forest headquarters for a briefing on chimp tracking. The rangers know the finest locations to readily track the chimps. As you walk through the jungle, you will encounter other primates such as monkeys, which will pique your interest as you move closer to the chimps. You return for lunch and rest after spending time with the chimps. Dinner and stay at your Day 1 hotel.
Day 6: Community Walk – Canopy Walk
In the morning, take a spectacular forest canopy hike; in the afternoon, take a community tour of the nearby settlements. Dinner and an overnight stay are included.
Transfer to Volcanoes National Park on Day 7.
Enjoy a breathtaking trip to Volcanoes National Park in the early morning, with stops for photography and lunch. In the evening, drive to Volcanoes National Park for dinner and an overnight stay at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge/La Palme Hotel/Muhabura Hotel.
Day 8: Tracking gorillas.
Wake up to an early breakfast at your hotel before heading to the Volcanoes park headquarters with your guide as early as 7:30 a.m. After a brief introduction to your planned gorilla tracking experience, including the dos and don’ts, you will explore the rain forest in search of mountain gorillas. Once you’ve met the gentle giants, you have a maximum of one hour with them before returning to your lodge. You can go for natural hikes or a cultural tour to the Ib’iwachu Cultural Village in the afternoon. Dinner and an overnight stay are included.
Tansfer to Gisenyi on Day 9: Golden Monkey/Dian Fossey
You will either go golden monkey tracking or embark on a Dian Fossey walk to Karisoke Research Centre, where Dian, an American anthropologist, spent years researching and conserving gorillas before being killed and buried close to Digit, a silverback gorilla. Transfer back to Lake Kivu. Relax on the beach, then head to Lake Kivu Serena Hotel/Stipp Hotel/Paradise Malahide for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 10: Boat ride and return to Kigali.
You will take a boat ride up to Coffee Island in the morning, with views of the surrounding islands. Return to Kigali, where you will arrive early to do any required shopping. You will then check into your hotel or be driven to the airport if your flight is on time.
